“Hearing and Doing the Word” Gospel Reflection for Sunday Message on 1/15/2023
1. How is merely listening to the Word an act of self-deception?
2. What do you do after you have been exposed to the Word of God?
3. The Word of God is given to draw you into a deeper more intimate relationship with God.
Are you approaching the Word as a relationship with God or as a religious duty to check off?
4. “But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no
hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”
James 1:25 ESV
o Are you really looking, intentionally looking, bending down to look into the Word of God?
o Are you persevering, continuing in staying near the Word of God?
o Are you doing, acting upon what you have seen in the Word of God?
5. God’s Word is calling us to a lifestyle of faith and repentance.
Four pieces of repentance-
1. Consideration – As I hear the Word of God I slow down and look and listen to examine myself.
A. What is it that God wants me to see through this passage of scripture that I
have not seen on my own?
B. What does God want me to see about myself?
2. Confession – I admit responsibility for what I say, for what I do, for the choices I make, and for the actions I take.
A. Where does God call me to own responsibility for what He has taught me in His word and make confession to Him and to others?
3. Commitment – I commit to new ways of thinking, commit to new ways of desiring, commit to new ways of acting, commit to new ways of speaking.
A. Where is God calling me to a brand new way of life?
4. Change – I apply those new commitments to the practical concrete situations and relationships of my everyday life.
A. Where is God calling me to follow through, to persevere, to actual change in the things that I’m doing?
Pray Psalm 19:7-11
Restate God’s truth, affirming your faith.
Talk to God about passages you don’t understand.
Ask God for what you need.
Confess sin and ask God to change your life.
Praise God with your paraphrase of the words of Scripture.
